Get daily updates directly to your inbox+ SubscribeThank you for subscribing!In a community wide campaign working towards a plastic bag free county, residents keen to curb pollution are rallying round to rid the area of carrier bags.And already the war against the plastic plague has received positive backing from some local traders and community leaders.Spearheading the drive to ditch plastic is Milnathort's Sarah Eaton."I've been avoiding using plastic bags for a few years by using alternatives," she explained."It's really easy I just got in the habit of taking my own cloth or cotton bags and not routinely using the plastic bags handed out in shops."Then I heard about Modbury in Devon, the first plastic bag free town in Britain, and I thought it could be possible to do the same here," she said.According to Government figures it is estimated around 13 billion carrier bags are handed out in the UK every year.Each bag typically costs around half a penny to produce and it is thought the nation's retailers spend around each year showering free plastic bags on their customers.Sarah believes the small change in Kinross shire could make a big difference."It's not that long ago that we all managed without free plastic carrier bags," she said."They've only been about for a few decades, yet now it seems to have become such a big hurdle to stop using them."The campaign to make Kinross shire plastic bag free has been warmly welcomed by local councillor, and businessman, Willie Robertson."We are in the very early stages of this at the moment, but I think once the ball starts rolling I would expect it to really gather momentum," he told the PA."Even if we manage to reduce plastic bag usage in the area by 70 per cent, we would view that as a success."Kinross shire is the sort of area where we can try to do this and it would send out a very strong message that we are environmentally aware," he added.And Cllr Robertson has vowed to lead by example in his own Milnathort shop."It's something we already do," he said."Most of our goods are in paper bags or cardboard boxes. We don't automatically hand out plastic bags.
